I've been in search of a torta place that surpasses teh one my dad took me to and this is it.  He even orders the torta milanesa and the torta cubana for him and my brother.  I picked it up for them and there is some serious girth to it, it weighs a few pounds and tastes to good.  I recommend the torta cubana with chorizo in the morning and the torta milanesa with everything for lunch.  Bring your appetite.  This place is busy.

Note before we begin: The place is hard to find as it has no store sign and the banner (someone mentioned) is also now gone. Look for neon signs that read torta in the window of a place in the same shopping center as Home Depot. Right at the corner of the one streetlight on story between Capitol and White.

My experience

Torta Milanesa plus tax: $5.85

Torta is made to order upon order. I lucked out as they were just taking a new batch of freshly baked bread out of the oven. Torta included fried pork, mayo, jalepenos (lots!), onions, tomatoes, and avacado. Waited no more than 5 minutes for my order and when I picked up the to-go bag I knew I was in for a treat! Carrying the dang thing out to the car was a bicep workout, it was quite hefty. Overall taste, which was authentic and amazing, coupled with that feeling of complete satisfaction from a full stomach makes this place a definite recommend!

Thanks to all the latest rage, i decided to drive that 2.11 miles down to this joint. It's a little hard to find because they don't have a solid sign; instead its a banner that reads Bakery Mexico.

Torta Milanesa. $5.25.
                                                      T h a n k    y o u .

Best 1021 Calories that i've engorged all week! Uh, not that i do that often.
It's  stuffed with tomatoes, meat, fresh avocados and jalepenos. Ayyyyy!
Next time i'll ask for mayo on the side because they really grease that baby up with it  *bleh*

These torta's are out of this world huge.

I didn't realize this place was located in the same plaza as Home Depot.   Judging by the people that come in and out of this place I think the cakes are a hit.  I saw people order these cakes left and right.  One of these days I'll have to try the cake but for now I must focus on the torta milanesa.

The wait ended up being a little long as anticipated but it was worth it.  They make your torta once you place an order.  When it was ready, the lady handed me this paper lunch bag that felt like it was 5lbs!  I'm serious.  That thing was heavy.  Wrapped in foil you can already tell that this torta is a monster.  It was already cut in half which was nice.  I couldn't even finish half of it.  Just as described, it had tomatoes, cheese, jalapenos, onions, avocados, some mayo and lots of meat.  The milanesa was reminiscent of a country fried steak but with yummy toppings. It was tasty.

Seriously people, if you have an appetite for torta's you need to come here.  I think I want to try the asada next :)

Torta milanesa: $5.25 for an amazing sandwich.  I would've paid at least $10 for this bad boy, but make damn sure that I'm happy about this price.

Freshly squeezed Orange Juice: $3.10 is kinda pricey, but  hey, it's freshly squeezed orange juice and it tasted great.

I wanna try every torta there.

After reading all the reviews, my husband and I decided to go here today for lunch.  All I can say is WOW!!!  I got the torta milanesa----lots of meat  and fresh veggies.  I can't believe they charge only $5.25 for this HUGE sandwich.  Not only that but it was DELICIOUS!  Hubby got the torta asada.   I got a bite of that and it was also good but I think the milanesa was tastier.  Next time I'll try the chicken and the cubana. Great customer service also.  I will definitely be a regular here!

their sandwiches are a big hit..is no surprise they were allowed to stay after all the new business developments happened. They are also very helpful and you must try their mamei shakes, just delicious! A sandwich as big as cake just for $5.25 and their shakes about $3.40 but all natural stuff no sugars or preservatives. Great for kids, they are also a bakery, which is why the bread is just fresh and delicious, they make it daily and have flans and desserts too.

Ohhhhh heaven!  I never had a torta before  The Torta milanesa was only $5.25, layers of delicious fried pork, cheese, mayo, veggies, freshly loasted bread.  It was split in half, and I could eat part of half of the sandwich!  It was so much food, I had part of it for breakfast and lunch the next day.  Yes, I recycle.  I didn't try the other sandwiches, but I'm looking foward to it.  I had a toast with butter suger, and horn puff with custard.  YUM!

Torta Milanesa:
Battered fried steak, loads of mexican cheese, mounds of avocado, onions, tomatoes, mayonesa, jalapenos, all between a light and airy seed bun

Torta Cubana:
Same as above but instead of steak, you get eggs, ham, chorizo and hotdogs...

I give a left nut for any one of these babies..

I don't know how an authentic torta should taste like, but I do know that the torta served in this place is GOOD!
We ordered Torta Milanesa and Torta Cubana. I personally like the Milanesa better, but both are good.
Definitely one of the best sandwich I ever taste.
Would definitely come back sometime!

Thanks to yelp, my friends and I decided to try this place out and try their famous tortas.  I had the torta de pollo, and I wasn't expecting it to be so huge when it came out.  That's a hella (yeah I said it) big torta for $5.25.   Even though I was starving, I couldn't finish it all.  The chicken was breast meat, but it wasn't dry, it was juicy and delicious.  I washed it down with an agua fresca de jamaica (not the country, google it).  Two things that would have been good is if they allowed refills of the agua fresca and if they offered salsa, cuz I loves me some salsa.  Some other interesting factoids to show this place is hardcore: Coke in glass bottles + Jarritos, my two friends were the only non-Mexicans there, which is always a good thing.  On a side note, there was a guy on the sidewalk selling raspados (google it, gringos).  Cool

less than $6 for a --single-- sandwich fit for two? Yes please!

I vote for the Torta Cubana minus the hotdog. The yummy greatness of Chorizo (yum), Ham (yum), fried egg (yum), hot dogs (meh), and lots and lots of avocado and tomatoes made me an extremely happy camper. The Milanesa was great too, but the unique omelet like sandwich that was the Cubano made it fantastic!

I made the serious mistake of ordering two of these heavyweights for me and my wife, and we have half of one of them sitting in the fridge right now and I was in a major food coma for the last 3 hours after eating too much. These are seriously HUGE and HEAVY sandwiches.

Also beware non-speaking spanish guests. Be prepared to be confused by the menu and try to bring a friend to help you order and go over the menu. Everything to order is Torta [insert filling name here]. We were lucky when we ordered and another person behind the counter helped the register translate for us.

They even gave us a free sample of a hot warm soft croissant (YUM!), which probably put us WAAAAY over our fill limit when it came down to torta munching time.

Everyone here is right. These tortas are So The Bomb. I didn't even know what a torta was before going to this little unimpressive-looking place located in a strip mall and filled with Spanish-speaking people.  But I'm so glad to have found out! They are huge delicious sandwiches! Luckily I can somewhat understand Spanish and so could tell what the menu said and could raise my hand when I heard my number called out in Spanish.  I got the Torta Asada with deliciously seasoned and cooked beef, avocadoes, tomato slices, onions and jalapenos. My brother got the Milanesa, and I think that was my favorite... it was very lightly breaded to the point that if these other reviews didn't mention it was breaded, I wouldn't have known. The beef was seasoned better than the Asada, in my opinion, with a more punchier flavor, otherwise the toppings were pretty much the same. The Cubana was straight-up weird with hot dog and chili and egg, which is an odd combination... but it works! It was also still good. Just a warning for the anti-mayo crowd, though, I think all of them had mayo on them. The only thing that wasn't so good was the "licuado" shake. It tasted like it had powdered milk in it, which left a yucky powdery residue on my tongue. But the price was awesome, it came out quick, and tasted good and left me full. Couldn't ask for more.

This place serves the best tortas in San Jose, they're bursting with meat, jalapenos, and avacados.    Big meat eaters should try the torta Cubana or the milanesa (breaded steak).  Good selection of bread, pan dulce, and licuados.

A friend turned me on to this spot and I haven't enjoyed another torta since.  They are perfect, every ingredient combines to make magic!  I've tried to find others that can even compare but to no avail.

I can't even put into words my love for this torta.

Get in the car.  Pop some Mexican alt-rock in the stereo, preferably Kinky, preferably this song: http://youtube.com/wat.... Now drive down 101 South.  Take the Story Road exit East, towards the hills.  Towards the barrio.  Keep going.  Past the dudes selling fake drivers licenses and social security cards.  No don't pull over yet.  You are almost there.  Ok, now pass Capitol Expressway.  shortly thereafter on your left side you will see a ghetto-ass abandonded shopping center with an unmarked run-down looking mexican bakery.  See the flashing neon sign in the window that says "TORTAS"?  You have arrived.

Find a parking spot.  Enter.  (Don't be afraid).

Now place your order.  Should be easy.  All they serve are tortas, cakes and pan dulce.  Forget the cakes and pan dulce.  YOU ARE NOT HERE FOR THAT.  You are on a covert mission, remember?  For the best torta in the Bay Area.  Possibly the world.

Extra tomato?  Sure!  Double avocado?  No problem!  No extra charge!  Do whatever you want!  Just don't be afraid to make a mess all over yourself.  These tortas are massive!  On perfectly toasted bread.  With the tangiest freshest mayo and zestily seasoned meat fillings.  And spicy as hell jalapenos.  Which of course you can get on the side, if you want.

Be sure to tip, the workers here are some of the nicest people you will ever meet plus they are selfless supporters of education in the local community.  Perhaps you are being served by students from the National Hispanic University.  Rest assured your torta purchase is going towards a good cause.

Now grab some napkins and go sit down in a hard plastic booth.  You are about to experience the bestest, most tastiest, most juiciest, finger licking good torta you will ever consume in your LIFE.

De verdad PARA CHUPARSE LOS DEDOS.

This place makes the BEST mexican tortas. The reason I would call it the best is because all of their bread is made fresh in house. This is a panaderia, you know. They butter & mayo their bread, slice on some avocados, tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos, and then they add your choice of meats. I myself love the milanesa -it consists of slices of steak that is breaded and fried to look like chicken fried steak but better. My boyfriend recently discovered the Azteca which had slices of grilled beef...very tasty. They have other variations like ham, eggs, chorizo, or something called a cubano which had ham, chorizo and hotdogs. Pair that torta up with a bottle coca-cola and you are good for the day...maybe even for the week.

As other have said - it's all about those tortas - they're giant, fresh and delicious. Some, like the cubana for example are too much meat for me - but the simpler ones are perfect. I ordered 'salchicha' thinking it would be some kind of special Mexican sausage... but it's just a hot dog, not too much fun.

Bread is good too, we've gotten pastries, and bolillos, good stuff.

Mexico Bakery serves the best tortas I've ever had--lightly grilled bread topped with mayonnaise, tons of meat, mild white cheese, onions, avocado, and pickled jalapenos.  There are at least four different kinds of meat--pork (lomo), thinly-sliced smoked ham (pierna), thin breaded steak (milanesa), and a mixture that includes a hot dog (cubana).  One torta should be enough for pretty much anyone for a meal.  They also sell licuados (fresh squeezed juices), bread and rolls, Mexican sweet bread, donuts, and cakes.  Visit the store around Christmas time and you'll even see baskets made of bread and filled with rolls.  We've tried the sweet bread and cakes here as well as the tortas, and everything has been good, but the tortas are the absolute best.  They cost about $5 each.

This is more of a takeout place than a sit-down place, although there are a few tables if you really want to stay there to eat.  There's a second location downtown near Santa Clara and Second.  The tortas are just as good there, but the selection of sweet bread is smaller.
