This was the first time my family and I actually went. It was a pretty nice place. Food was ok but could have been a little better. Drinks were better than the food but I would go back maybe one day.

Oh hell yes!
You can have your cheesesteaks. THIS is what Philly, in particular old school South Philly, is all about.
Nicks (is @ 19145 zip code ) has Great Roastbeef Sandwiches make you never to think of Arby's!!! This is the Philly smack to Arby's! Another packed place after and before ballgames especially Phillies games. An alternative to the cheesesteak to gain some pounds.

Nicks, yesss! An institution in Philadelphia as one of the best dive bars around. You'll love the roast beef sandwiches and the dive decor. It'll take you back to the days when Philly was rougher and not as chi-chi. But I'll guarantee you'll remember it fondly.

Old-school dive bar that just happens to have the most toothsome roast beef AND roast pork sandwiches in South Philly.
They cleaned it up a few years ago, so it looks a smidge spiffier than it did in the Reagan administration, but otherwise nothing has changed. Same old-lady hustlers still trying to scam likely marks into buying them a drink, too.
Thorough sandwiches paired with necessarily cold draft beers- Miller Lite and Bud are the stars of the selection. Last time I had fries they had a disappointingly repulsive reek of elderly oil, but everything else was a drippy drunky good time.

Listen, I'll make this very simple for you, if you want a roast beef sandwich, go here. There are few places that even come close to rivaling Nick's. It's the best.

Ok, look: I haven't eaten meat in a couple years, and I still recommend this place. I grew up in Philly and my parents have been going to Nick's forever. I have since moved away, but every once in a while I still get overwhelming cravings for a roast beef sandwich from Nick's, and as a vegetarian, that speaks volumes about how great this place is.

As all of the previous reviews have pointed out, Nick's has the absolute freaking best roast beef sandwiches in Philly. Their sandwiches are juicy, beefy goodness on a roll. It's real roast beef, not the heated up lunchmeat stuff that you find at some other places. And it's a no-frills joint. The sandwiches are also pretty cheap. Nick's is also a Philly institution, so if you haven't eaten there yet, I feel bad for you because you're really missing out.

I've been eating Nick's roast beef ever since I was a kid. They make the best roast beef sandwiches that I've ever had.
When you eat at Nick's, you really feel like you're in Philly. It's great!

Hit up Nick's with a few work friends. I got the roast beef/provolone sandwich, which was very good. The atmosphere is very casual; sorta like a neighborhood hangout.

I have to say...they make a FANTASTIC roast beef. The place looks like, no let me correct myself, IS a dive bar...they have little to nothing going on inside...but the delicious smell of Roast beef cooking is just sooooo yummy.
The sandwich is simple, hot roast beef on a kaiser with Provolone cheese. What more could you want?
The first time I tried these I will admit I was already two sheets to the wind...and the next day I thought I'd remembered liking them...so I went back to taste it with sober taste buds....and I was not wrong! Simply delicious. Even if it's a bit of a hike south..(like it is for me) it's worth it!

the best roast beef sandwich around. we've been eating here for years (me plus my family = since it opened) and my favorite thing about my pool league is that two bars are right around the corner and i get to sneak away for a nick's every now and then. whenever my sister used to get her braces tightened (15 years ago), her my mom and i would go to nick's after. she's now a vegetarian, but oh how she hated that she couldn't eat the sammie while we devoured ours. hehee, that was actually pretty cruel of our mom. heh. it's closed on sundays, so beware.
