I'm traveling to Maui this summer for the first time so I really don't know what the island has to offer. I'm staying in on the west side of the island in Lahaina (kapalua). I'm really looking for great restaurants, hiking and nice beaches that aren't very far. Thanks in advance.

I totally recommend getting up at the crack of dawn and doing the Haleakala sunrise bike tour. Yes, touristy, but just really nice. It's not a hard bike ride though, if that's what you're looking for.

Thanks, is that the ride down the side of the mountain after sunrise?

S N. says:
Yep! That's the one. Despite the hot weather near the beach, it is FREEZING up there at sunrise so bring some warm clothes that you can peel off as you ride down.

When I was a kid we used to snorkel at Mile 16 but I think it's been found out now so it's crowded. Memorable restaurants when we went last year were Kobe' (tepanyaki place that I didn't expect to be good b/c of all the coupons you find for it, but in fact was good), Cheeseburger In Paradise for lunch (sit on the top deck), Roy's (for a nice night out). I also really enjoyed sitting on the patio at The Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua with a drink and the super expensive fruit and cheese plate (it was worth it!)

Old Lahaina town is really cool - historical, but a little touristy none the less. The beach is never that far, by the way. And try the Road to Hana (sooooo against your rental car policies but everyone does it).

Agreed the time I went to maui the road to Hana was pretty extreme. But worth it i think. Beautiful waterfalls and walks. Even though its super deadly.

You have to go to Big Beach (Makena) south of Wailea. It's the best beach on Maui, and it's not crowded like the Ka'anapali stretch along the resorts. Spend a day driving down the Road to Hana, if you have the time. It's perhaps the most memorable drive you'll ever take. If you want to read up on Maui, 'Maui Revealed' by Andrew Doughty is the best travel guide. He and his wife have written the best guide series for the islands.

The drive to Hana is awesome, but I happened upon a few locals while stopping for a swim at a waterfall on the way - and got a really bad feeling.. like I wasn't welcome. Beat it out of there fast. But do it anyway and watch your back. - L.
